Methods of Translating-Week 1

In this brief, I explored methods of translating by working around photographs by photographer, also my talented friend, Danni XU.

⁕ Copying

I started with sketching the images, while also carefully observing each photograph.

⁕ Colour separation

Considering converting these images from digital photos to physical prints, I planned to print these images with 2 or 3 colours. The limitations of the spot colour printing process provide the possibility for these images to be viewed differently.

⁕ Risograph printing

⁕ Transposing

I also tried dividing the image into multiple parts and recombining them, and also explored around overlapping different combinations with screening.

⁕ Captioning

I asked the photographer for some extra information about the photos when she took them. By captioning images with this information, new perspectives were created. However, I was not sure if this is still translating by adding extra things.

⁕ General feedback

  • The process of registration with risograph printing could be a direction to be explored.
  • Captions beside images expand the ‘view’ outside of the frame, which could be regarded as another way of translating.
