Methods of Cataloguing-Week 2

In the second week of experiments, I switched my focus to the nature of my objects as library books. As a part of the community, these books carry marks left by readers, borrowers, librarians and time.

Collection of traces people left in the books

⁕ Captioning and collaging

I experimented with creating an index of traces left in books, mimicking the form of library circulation cards, aiming to make obvious those parts of the books. I also tried to collage some of those traces on the back of the cards, exploring how they might change the perception of the viewer of the cards and the books.

⁕ General feedback

  • Consider whether the visual is drawing the audience’s attention back to the original material or away from them?
  • Consider how different design decisions impact the experience of viewing or using. Should the message be obviously conveyed at first sight? Or do people need to take some time to notice or understand the message?
